Once in a Blue Moon

Now they have taken away my blue moon! I listen to too much radio during the day. KEMC for Chrysti the Wordsmith and Performance Today in the morning. Streaming radio is wonderful. After lunch, I am off to Red River Radio for classical, show tunes, and other eclectic combinations. I like to save All Things Considered for dinner at home, so I have been listening to KNTU is the late afternoon for Jazz (sorry Brad Edwards) and horribly mispronounced world news.

So yesterday, I heard Robert talk with someone from Sky and Telescope about the fact that they got their facts wrong back in 1946 and are just now fessing up. Now the little bit of Earth and Sky I heard did not seem to quibble about calling tonight's beautiful moon I enjoyed during my walk in the park a Blue Moon. To be fair, Wikipedia does go into a lot of detail. If I wanted an authoritative source, I would search Chrysti's site, but she does not have a search tool. BTW, congrats on the new sponsor!

I will continue to refer to the second full moon as a Blue Moon, at least until Mr Bush correctly pronounces "nuclear," and long after that. For all my life, this has been true (and Pluto was a planet). Give us a term that works (blog, rendez-vous, cyberspace) and we will continue to use it and give it new meaning - regardless of what the word or phrase used to mean. (Note: this last paragraph has no hyperlinks to go stale when the link breaks.)

Hi David. Don't let Sky & Telescope's laboring of their 1940s "error" ruin your enjoyment of the Blue Moon! It has been folklore in the making ... a fascinating look at how such things come to be. For more, here's a link to an article by folklorist Philip Hiscock: Folklore of the Blue Moon
Yeah, I saw that one doing my research. Language is almost as much fun as the sky! Both are so alive with wonder.
