I think I like kairos much more than chronos. Friday, I measured off the end of the first fifty blocks of chronos we call years. Since Geoff had stuff to do (read:a date), we decided we would have the family dinner celebration on Saturday. I also planned to talk to all me siblings and children over the week end. Since I have one more of each to go, this make it a birthday week end. Along with being 50 for the first time, this week-end has marked other firsts or I-can't remember-when's.
Geoff and I often have sourdough waffles on Saturday morning, but this week I decided to make pancakes. I cannot remember the last time I made pancakes instead of waffles. They were good and will go into the rotation. I also made a rare loaf of sourdough in the bread machine. I think I finally found a recpie that works.
For years, Geoff has been in the Tyler Youth Orchestra and gotten scholarships. This year, his last, I finally decided to go out and get stuff for the silent auction for the dinner in late February. So far I have collected close to $600 worth of stuff and have more to go. I doubt I will spend any more time knocking on new doors, but I will follow up on those I have been to that have not given me an answer. Actually, it was kind of fun.
By the time I finished that project, picked up an item I have been waiting for, going to the wine store, and then to the grocery store, I was almost four hours away from home in and out of the van. I can't remember that last time I spent that much time in the van and wasn't on a trip to see someone playing somewhere.
At the wine store, I found the label Kristi recommend, but I guess I was in the wrong part of the store as I could only find 1.5 L bottles instead of the .75 L's I usually buy. I don't think I have every finished that much wine with four people in one sitting. I plan to buy .75's from now on.
Kristi graciously offered to make dinner and the shopping list had both elbow macaroni and cheddar cheese on the same list. I was afraid. It turned out great, but Kraft Mac-n-Cheese was a quick staple while the kids were growing up. I did not actually buy elbow mac, I bought something close enough to make Krisit happy and far enough away that I could keep from revisiting those memories.
This was the first birthday I have celebrated as single person since I was 19 years old. I sure never planned it this way, but I think I should try to do at least a few more single just to find out who I am at the core. I suppose I feel a little like Nathan off in DC discovering who he wants to be. I thought a lot on my walk today about the decades of life. I had not planned for the fifth decade to start like the 2nd with so much self discovery, but I guess that is okay. The 20's was all about starting a family, the 30's was all about raising a family, the 40's was all about watching the family start to leave the nest, and the 50's will be about watching them build their own families as I learn more about who I am and rebuild my own life. Well, enough with the decades.
I think I will like the 50's.
