The Theatre

Well, I watched Man of La Mancha for the first time tonight, live on stage. It was opening night and I volunteered to serve at the concession stand. Hard to believe I have made it past 50 and never had seen the show before. The show was carried by the acting tonight. I don't mean the singing was bad; I mean the acting carried the show. I know full well why tears stained my cheeks tonight. The power of myth is great.

Tomorrow night, I plan to see Amazing Grace at the cinema with friends. I best bring a hankie or six with me. I know the power of story is amplified when it is wrapped in the stained rags of history.

The first time I saw the show, live, in person was at the theatre behind the Fortin theatre whose name escapes me now...Fortin Theatre? Anyway dad was in it, can't remember what part he played, a priest or something?

The Priest parts were in Fiddler on the Roof and in Royal Hunt of the Sun. In Man of LaMancha I simply played the Guard who brought Quixote down the steps to his cell and then brought him out at the end of the play. this was th firt play on the new stage at the Billings Studio Theatre. Hall Diteman directed and I insisted that I had to be in the production and this was the only part I could do while being out of town recriting most of the time.

No. No. It was the Rabbi in Fiddler - not a Priest. That is where I learned the Baruch. Baruch ata adonai, elehelu, molech olom. (or something like that.) Blessed be thou, O Lord our God, kind of the universe." And, God, bless this sewing machine.
