Some Days Are Just Too Long

Sunday started out great. I got up and hit the temp in the house and the snooze button two more times after that. 28 outside brought the house down to 58 by morning. The robot will not let it go lower. Since this morning was not a normal Sunday, I had to kick the robot to turn the heat up sooner. After a shower, I dressed, finished packing, and knocked on Geoff’s door. “10 minutes!” In plenty of time, we drove to the Cook’s Stop via the ATM at the bank for greens and breakfast. We split the greens and had the French breakfast: eggs, tomatoes, potatoes, and a bit of baguette.

The Tyler airport was no problem. I even had time to check my email and a blog or two. Chris’ and Geoff’s were off limits due to the city firewall. Yes, the flight was an hour late, but that was expected. Once at the expected gate in DFW, the employee at the desk brushed me off when I asked for a time schedule from my direct to Greenville flight. She was very busy with her keyboard. I devoured my Cook’s Stop lunch, turkey with real mustard in the foil pouch. After I finished my hand-crafted chips, I got up to get the latest on my flight. Ms. Crabby was still buried in her keyboard, so I tried Ms. Gate 7, leaving Ms. Gate 8 to her photons. Ms. Gate 7 took plenty of time to look up all the information I needed and give me a time frame. “Looks like 2:00.” I guess that is not bad for a 12:45 flight on an ugly-weather day.

About 1:30 or so, I strode back to deal with Ms. Gate 8. She was still up to her scowling eyebrows in frustration, brushing off the person in front of me to Chris. When I said “Greenville,” she looked up from her photons (that must have more important than any flesh and blood customers) to tell me that I had missed the gate change call. I guess I must have, but I never left the gate area. I admit I was caught up in the Milka struggles in Fury, but I know I heard several other announcements. Thankfully, Chris took my problem to heart and rebooked me to Greenville via Chicago O’Hare, which unlike Tyler Pounds does not have public internet access without numbers from one of my cards. I did not figure posting this right away was worth $6.95 plus tax. Bless you Chris!!! May you have Ms. Gate 8’s job in the very near future, unless you are already higher up the food chain.

I did get to fly out over the Lake today and drink Illinois Starbucks. I suppose the swipe on my Starbucks card even left my magnetic fingerprints in the Windy City. I will get to Greenville tonight, but I won’t have a car until the morning. They closed at six. I think they are an hour ahead so it is now 7:30 where I plan to lay me down to sleep tonight. I will now check with Linda of the Lovely Smile to see if she knows what will happened to my luggage that got to Greenville hours before I did. I am surprised they did not do a luggage-boarding pass match and track me down as a terrorist! Yes, I am annoyed, but I will get over it by bed time tonight.

Update: 6:54 pm. I am now at gate H3A instead of Linda’s H1B. I heard the announcement this time. Moses assured me that my baggage, at least, did not get lost along the way. It got to GSP at 6:30,approximately 30 minutes ago. It will have a four hour wait for me to catch up.

Update: 12:30 am Monday. I was too tired and frustrated to right this then, but I did not get to my hotel until after midnight. My baggage was locked way and I had to get an airport cop to get it for me. My car was gone, so I had to rent one that was more expensive. I could not find my map to the hotel. My cell phone, with the number to the hotel, was dead as dead could be. After getting directions from people at four different places, I finally inched my way to the hotel and crashed.

Did you look up Ira Glass while you were in Chicago? Man, I would love to go check out the corner of Michigan and Wacker. Sarah Vowell wrote an entire essay about that corner.

I think I'll just stay home and wait for the world to come to me! I'm tired just reading about it.
